Arts Council Funding Success!
We're pleased to inform you that we received funding for our wagon tour from ARts Council England, this means we can do our mini pilot tour this year and show all you lovely people or wagon!
Whilst on the subject of funding, its paramount to mention that we were truly saddened to hear of a number of brilliant organisations and venues, some of which are our friends, that have sadly have their funding cut.
These cuts have certainly given us all something to think about, and has made us more determined than ever to create better and more innovative theatre in the years to come.

A Grand New Adventure
The current wagon working it's magic at BestivalWe're currently very excited about our next project. We're developing a bigger and better (and more roadworthy) wagon to perform in. But this one will have a bigger stage, benches for audience seating, a solar powered LED lighting rig, and will be covered by a large canopy.
For the wagon we will be developing a new show, about growing and reflection, with influences from William Blake and quantum theory, and of course with the usual magical blend of puppetry, live music and storytelling.
The wagon will allow us to create a unique experience, the audience will be able to walk in to world of The River People. We're very excited.
The plan is to apply for funding and tour the wagon around festivals next year, then to veues around the south east in autumn 2011. Keep your eyes peeled!
Return from the Fringe and Bestival fun
Well, we had a lovely time in Edinburgh, the Terrible Tales went down very well, selling out all but a few nights. The company also had a good time performing the scratch show 'Little Matter' at the Edinburgh International Festival.
We've also recently come back from performing The Terrible Tales out of a gypsy wagon at Bestival on the Isle of Wight. Apart from the muddy camping it was really fun. People seemed to love the show, we had quite large crowds gathering around us for each of the four shows we did every day. And I think they liked finding a quaint little acoustic show, even if we were battling with thumping base from a tent across the field!
This was our first time at a festival, hopefully the wagon will be at a festival near you next year. Watch this space!
Hello Edinburgh, we've missed you!

The River People have all safely arrived in Edinburgh, in their new van (she is called 'Maudrey'!) all set to start 'The Terrible Tales of the Midnight Chorus' tomorrow at 4:15pm at the Bedlam Theatre....would be lovely to see you there!
Spinney Hollow we love you so....
As part of our ongoing relationship with Spinney Hollow Woods we held a fundraiser last saturday to raise funds for edinburgh....over 100 people attended and joined us in a magical evening of music, puppetry, good food and a beautiful atmosphere.
We hope to make this an annual event every summer, Ed and Claire and Kate and Geoff from Spinney Hollow are already planning a september storytelling event and a Halloween event out there too....
Goodbye Interns...
This week saw us wave goodbye to the last of the interns we have taken on this summer. So big thanks to Holly Hale, Eimhin Walker & Alex Brown for being so willing to do all the jobs we asked of them.
In autumn we will be looking for an intern for a few months to take on as an administrator...so if you are interested in all things admin related do email us with an expression of interest and a cv at hello@theriverpeople.co.uk
'Little Matter' is on it's way....
So after a long week of devising, writing and scratching Claire, Ed, Joe and Clare showed their version of 'Little Matter' to a scratch audience (thanks for coming!) and got a lot of useful feedback.
If you are curious about what we did why not come and see the show?

River People at the Winchester Hat Fair
'Terrible Tales of the midnight chorus' on the wagon at the Hat fair last weekend went really well. We met loads of lovely people! 'Terrible Tales' is going into rehearsal next week in preperation for the show at Spinney Hollow on the 24th July (tickets available by contacting kate@spinneyhollow.co.uk) and for the Edinburgh fringe festival from 8th-20th August 2010 at the Bedlham Theatre.
Lilly gets a polish for tour

We have been busily re-rehearsing 'Lilly through the dark' to take on tour, starting in Bath on the 7th & 8th of May. It will be our first Arts Council funded tour, and we are really looking forward to it. For all tour dates, check our home page.
Rehearsals this week were put on hold when our new performer, Jake, had a motorbike accident. Its nothing terribly serious though there are a few broken bones! Fortunately he is going to be well enough to start rehearsals again this coming week, so no real damage done to the process!
We'll be blogging in the week so keep an eye on our blog...
We welcome a new performer into our ranks....
Jake gets serious during our read throughWell, it took two hard weeks, 12 auditions, a lot of tea, discussion and disagreement but we have now found a new performer to play the role of 'The Willow' on our 'Lilly through the dark' tour 2010, which kicks off in Bath 7th & 8th of May.
So we'd like to welcome Jake Cuddihy into the company, Jake got off to a brilliant start in rehearsals, settling in well, picking everything up very easily...and then last saturday he had a motorbike accident, so we've had the past week off and had to postpone the rehearsal! Jake is okay and is recovering well at home so we do not have to postpone the tour!
After that hell of a start we'll be keeping you posted on news from the rehearsal room through next week.
'Farewell and adieu to our sweet spanish Andy....'
Early rehearsal shot for 'The Ordinaries' 2006 (L-R) ANdy Gray, Joe Bone, Clare Pointing, Kathryn Bond, Ed WrenWe are waving a sad goodbye to our longest serving River Person, Andy Gray. Andy is leaving the company to join to RAF as an airman, and whilst we wish him every success in his chosen career he will be sorely missed by us all.
Andy joined us back in 2006, before we were even a company, for the first casting of 'The Ordinaries' a year before we got our first break at NSDF in 2007. He took the role of 'The Son' and received fantastic feedback for his portrayal of the puppet 'Sarah's older step sibling. Andy then went on to be offered the role of 'The Willow' in award winning show 'Lilly through the dark' which was equally met with praise for his performance.
We will be having a big send off for him before he joins the RAF in june, and we're sure you will join us in wishing him the best of luck in his new career!
(Andy isn't really spanish,..this was part of his favourite warm up song during his time with us!)
The River People at Spinney Hollow
The River People at Spinney Hollow 2009We love performing at Spinney Hollow, a copse of ancient woodland in Fair Oak Hampshire, its always a magical evening under the stars with fabulous audiences...so we've decided to do it again!
Following our success out in the Hollow last year (sold out super quick!) we are performing 'The Terrible Tales on the Midnight Chorus' on Saturday 24th July at 7:30pm. This show combines a live band, with story songs and puppetry in a raucous yet delicate tapestry of the jolly and the macabre!

'Little Matter' development
Joe, Claire and Clare try out some junk puppetry! After a successful week playing with wood, cardboard and making new puppets Ed, Claire, Joe & Clare came up with 20 minutes of material for 'Little Matter' and got some very useful feedback from a small test audience at BAC (thank you if you came!) will this material make the fianl show for Edinburgh International festival?? Who knows! but we had a lot of fun making it.
'The Ordinaries' on hold!
Due to a lack of time to develop it pre-Edinburgh Fringe, our revival of 'The Ordinaries' has been put on hold......but it will be back one day, as we all love it, its a case of when....
'The Terrible Tales of The Midnight Chorus' hits the Edinburgh Fringe 2010
'The Terrible Tales of The Midnight Chorus' is going to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for 2 weeks to the lovely Bedlam Theatre. This show, which was originally performed as part of '10 days at The Laundry' in Winchester, features both old and new performers and musicians, and is a collection of dark stories, told through the use of puppetry and song by The Midnight Chorus band.
Award Winning Solo show from River People's Joe Bone in Hampshire
Catch our very own River People Performer Joe Bone in his one man film noir parody 'Bane' produced by Whitebone productions at The Point Theatre, Eastleigh on Friday 26th & Saturday 27th March...we highly recommend it!
Arts Council Funding Success for 'Lilly through the dark'
'Lilly through the dark' got its funding to tour from Arts Council England! SO we are all very happy here at River HQ! This means that we can now tour the show around the South East (and South West a little!) without breaking the bank so keep an eye out for us in your area...tour dates will be on the website shortly, watch this space!
